A Nigerian court has successfully implemented their new anti-piracy laws to fine a hostage team a sum of 10 Million Nigerian Naira. Hostage teams are widely implemented to safely evacuate individuals held for ransom.
The convicted were accused of criminal conspiracy for terrorism and kidnap due to their involvement in facilitating a $200,000 ransom payment. Although the perpetrators of the kidnap itself are still untraced, with links being made to the hostage team’s involvement, there is hope that this incident will be swiftly resolved.
The ransom was demanded after 3 crew were kidnapped from an Equatorial Guinea vessel near the end of March. The abductors demanded and received a ransom payment of $200,000, the captive crew members were subsequently released, albeit nearly 2 months after the kidnap incident.
These advancements in anti-piracy laws which intertwine with kidnap are promising however the risk of kidnap is not yet eliminated, both on land and at sea. Therefore kidnap and ransom insurance is becoming a widely recommended product.
