No one's out here doing it like me bruv says London's richest car thief
There have been two common constants in my life over the past twenty-four months. England being reduced to 21-3 in any cricket fixture we are playing and someone on a local Facebook group asking to make their Range Rover “Too hot to handle” as it got pinched off their drive the night before.
But there is a new headache developing and deja-vu is sweeping over. We have unfortunately seen a spike in Ferraris of all models being stolen. As is the trend, this is starting in London and making its way out to other parts of the UK and most commonly the black country in the last couple of months. There were Nineteen confirmed thefts between January – April this year and one YouTube account suggesting Forty were stolen in one week in June, Forty!!
As always there are numerous rumours and suggestions as to why the little so and so’s have moved on from Range Rovers to Ferraris. Why would you move from the subtle black Range Rover to a bright yellow 812 bombing it down Shaftesbury Avenue?
Well, there will be a bigger picture here and from the looks of it, a much bigger OCG (Organised Crime Group for the non Line of Duty detectives out there). The Ferrari data leak back in March can not of possibly helped anything – Benedetto Vigna if you’re reading this Sir, HMU for some Cyber Insurance. The biggest rumour on the mill is that these thefts are stemming from Russia. Given the heavy sanctions that is being imposed and the shortage of new cars making their way over, it is suggested the banished oligarchs are getting their cars through a “Pinch to order” service and making their way to Moscow. Or this could all be simply that one so and so saw the other so and so’s TikTok of the guy driving around London commentating that “no one is out here doing it like me bruv” and wants a piece of that action. There are much better hobbies to get into, lads.
So, what can we do to minimise this and stop the Range Rover Raptor 2.0:
- Trackers – S5 trackers will usually be a basic requirement for any vehicle with a value over £75,000 but we recommend upgrading. Metatrak are a market leader at the moment for the same cost as most other branded trackers.
- Stopping the chance of a “Relay Attack” – this is the keyless theft we all know about. One person is stood by your house searching for the key signal, one is stood by your car receiving the signal then bam – the car is unlocked and engine has started. Leave car keys as far away from external walls of the house and buy a Faraday-style wallet to store the keys. This helps block any external signals.
- Steering wheel lock – prevention is the best cure! Buy the biggest, brightest, ugliest one you can find.
- Garaging – Like the trackers, most insurers will require Ferrari’s to be garaged, depending on the location. Upgrade security to ensure it’s as safe as it can. If you live in London and like most Ferrari owners, do minimal mileage, think about secure car storage locations.
